Combat report: 1 January 1945

(1 Focke Wulf Fw190 destroyed)

I was flying Green 3 and whilst in the circuit over Base I saw Ack-Ack bursting at low altitude in the direction of Nijmegen. I flew on the deck towards Nijmegen and saw two Fw190s and one Me109 in the line abreast heading North East at zero feet. One of the 190s was behind and weaving and I fired a short burst at this one from about 300 yards range 10 degrees off. I observed no strikes.

By this time I was good 10 miles North East of Nijmegen. I closed on the Fw190 to about 100 yards, 5 degrees off and fired a two-second burst allowing quarter of a ring deflection. I saw strikes around the cockpit and on starboard wing. The Fw190 immediately went into a steep turn, and after one complete turn, straightened out as if attempting to crash land but hit the ground, violently expolded and blew up into small pieces. My petrol was getting low and I had to return to base.
