Combat report: 23 January 1945

(1 Bf 109 destroyed)

I was leading a formation of 8 aircraft on an armed recce in the Osnabrück-Minden area, when the leader of the top section reported an aircraft landing on the aerodrome about 8 miles north of Osnabrück. Both he and his No.2 went down to strafe this aircraft and while covering them I noticed a single-engined aircraft flying north between the two aerodromes almost on the deck. I dived down, closing range to 200 yards and idetified as an Me 109, just as it was making the last turn of its approach to land at the 'drome about 12 miles north of Osnabrück, I fired a one-second burst at approx. 200 yards using almost full deflection so that the a/c was actually hidden from my view under the nose, at the moment of firing. I therefore could not see the direct results of my fire, but on lowering my nose I saw the nose of the e/a drop sharply and it dived vertically into the ground approx. 1 mile east of Hesepe A/Fd wheer it began to smoke. As it was going down in this dive I noticed that both the landing wheels were lowered. The actual crash was witnessed by several memebers of my section. The e/a was camouflaged dark grey.

My cine camera was exposed.

Claim: 1 Me 109 destroyed.
