Combat report: 15 April 1945 |
(1/2 Focke Wulf Fw190 destroyed)
I was flying Black 1 and engaged on an armed recce in the Wismar - Butzow area, when I heard 486 Squadron reporting Fw190s to the south of me. I turned the formation south and when in the area of Uelzen, I sighted a number of Fw190s being engaged by 486 Squadron.
I selected one of these a/c for attack & followed him through a series of manoeuvres; during the course of which I got in three bursts approx. 1 second each & allowing a wide deflection. On the third of these attacks the e/a was making a tight turn to starboard & allowing 60-70 degrees deflection I got in a 1 second burst fron 150 yards. My height at this time was 5,550 ft. I saw strikes in the area of the cockpit, the cockpit hood flying off. I alsa what appeared to be holes in the fuselage just behind the cockpit. He turned on his back & went vertically downwards, pieces flying off on the way down. I did not see the pilot get out & the a/c crashed in a sheet of flames in some woods. Black 2 (Sgt Turner) made an attack on this a/c as it was diving vertically, obtaining strikes on the tail & seeing pieces fly off.
Claiming 1/2 Fw190 destroyed, shared with Sgt Turner.
