Scale Aviation Modeller International January 2012
Modellers Profile No 54, Tempest Tossed and Late Tempest Models
Webmaster reviews: It's always nice to see Tempest in magazines, but.... "The Modellers Profile No 54" is two pages, with three small b/w photos AND five colour profiles. Profiles where a Mk. V Series I side view is used for every one. Mk. V Series I and II, Mk VI and TT5. Yes and they also have seven (7) exhaust stacks!! A profile of Beamont's R-B (JN751), without i/d or D-day stripes, is said to be a Mk. VI from October 1944!
The article "Tempest Tossed" lists kits, accessories, decals and references. Useful!
"Late Tempest Models" shows a number of built plastic kits. Looks like some of the captions are mixed up? A Mk. V is called F.2 (Mk. II) and a Mk. VI is a Mk. V.
These articles could have been better with some research!

The Third Shall be First with the Tempest
Martyn Chorlton outlines the operations of 3 Sqn while flying the Tempest during the build-up to D-Day and the V-1 campaign, which earned the unit Battle Honours Fortess Europe 1942-44, Channel & North Sea 1941-45 and Normandy 1944.
Webmaster reviews: 5 pages, including +10 b/w photos and a colour profile. Great article about a squadron which did a fantastic job against the V-1s. But as the article ends "the Tempest pilots and in particular the Newchurch Wing, were never officially recognised for their actions". |

FlyPast October 2011
Indian Vintage Aircraft Flight takes shape.
The article is about the Douglas Dakota N347DK which is prepared for the IAF Vintage Aircraft Flight (VAF). But the most interesting part in the text is:
"VAF anticipates receiving a further four aircraft later this year. These consist of Spitfire VIII NH631, a Hurricane I, a Hawker Tempest II and the world's only surviving Westland Wapiti."

Booker's Beauties - Personal Plane Services at work
One of the UK's longest-established restorer/operators, Booker-based Personal Plane Services, continues to remain at the forefront of historic aviation activity. Words and pictures by Richard Paver.
Webmaster reviews: Interesting reading about the company which restores Kermit Weeks' Tempest Mk. V EJ693. 6 pages with photos, none of the Tempest though. Including a half page of the company owner Tony Bianchi's thoughts about the Tempest restoration.

Master Models Hawker Tempest Mk. II with type history, In detail, Scale drawings & Tempest down.
Webmaster reviews: An awesome issue with a in deep article with Brian Rawcliffe's Vailly Aviation Tempest Mk. II, lots of photos. 6 pages type history, around 50 photos of Hendon's PR536. 5 pages with Artur Bentley's 1/50 scale drawings of Tempest Mk. II. And finally the fascinating story about the Tempest Mk.II which force-landed in the Russina zone in March 1947.
Highly recommended issue!!!! |

Flight Journal December 2009
Death at Daybreak by Jack Stafford
"It was 1940 during the Battle of Britain; I was 17 years old and still at school. Many NZ boys little older were flying and fighting, some dying in the cold northern sky. I had to help. I joined the RZNAF, bacame a pilot, went to England and became a member of the New Zealand Fighter Squadron. In 1946, I returned to New Zealand with my experiences burned deep into my brain. Now very old, I dream of those days and the men I flew with. How I remember!"
Webmaster reviews: It's actually two stories by Jack Stafford in this issue. "Death at Daybreak" about a mission on 26 November 1944, and "Flying the Hawker Tempest", Jack's first flight in a Tempest.
As all stories by Jack (read a few here!) very stirring. Lets hope Jack some day decides to publish a book with all his memories.
