Modellers Profile No 54, Tempest Tossed and Late Tempest Models

Webmaster reviews: Image0003

It's always nice to see Tempest in magazines, but.... "The Modellers Profile No 54" is two pages, with three small b/w photos AND five colour profiles. Profiles where a Mk. V Series I side view is used for every one. Mk. V Series I and II, Mk VI and TT5. Yes and they also have seven (7) exhaust stacks!! A profile of Beamont's R-B (JN751), without i/d or D-day stripes, is said to be a Mk. VI from October 1944!

The article "Tempest Tossed" lists kits, accessories, decals and references. Useful!

"Late Tempest Models" shows a number of built plastic kits. Looks like some of the captions are mixed up? A Mk. V is called F.2 (Mk. II) and a Mk. VI is a Mk. V.

These articles could have been better with some research!

The Third Shall be First with the Tempest

Martyn Chorlton outlines the operations of 3 Sqn while flying the Tempest during the build-up to D-Day and the V-1 campaign, which earned the unit Battle Honours Fortess Europe 1942-44, Channel & North Sea 1941-45 and Normandy 1944.

Webmaster reviews:

5 pages, including +10 b/w photos and a colour profile. Great article about a squadron which did a fantastic job against the V-1s. But as the article ends "the Tempest pilots and in particular the Newchurch Wing, were never officially recognised for their actions".

FlyPast October 2011

Indian Vintage Aircraft Flight takes shape.

The article is about the Douglas Dakota N347DK which is prepared for the IAF Vintage Aircraft Flight (VAF). But the most interesting part in the text is:

"VAF anticipates receiving a further four aircraft later this year. These consist of Spitfire VIII NH631, a Hurricane I, a Hawker Tempest II and the world's only surviving Westland Wapiti."

Awesome model, the article is just missing the sound of the Moki-engine!! :-)

One of the UK's longest-established restorer/operators, Booker-based Personal Plane Services, continues to remain at the forefront of historic aviation activity. Words and pictures by Richard Paver.

Webmaster reviews:

Interesting reading about the company which restores Kermit Weeks' Tempest Mk. V EJ693. 6 pages with photos, none of the Tempest though. Including a half page of the company owner Tony Bianchi's thoughts about the Tempest restoration.

Hawker Tempest Pilot.

Webmaster reviews:
Tempest is rare these days in avation magazines, so it's nice to read this article. Only 2 pages though. But I have to thank the author/magazine for the plug for this website!

Master Models Hawker Tempest Mk. II with type history, In detail, Scale drawings & Tempest down.

Webmaster reviews:

An awesome issue with a in deep article with Brian Rawcliffe's Vailly Aviation Tempest Mk. II, lots of photos. 6 pages type history, around 50 photos of Hendon's PR536. 5 pages with Artur Bentley's 1/50 scale drawings of Tempest Mk. II. And finally the fascinating story about the Tempest Mk.II which force-landed in the Russina zone in March 1947.

Highly recommended issue!!!!

Flight Journal December 2009

Death at Daybreak

by Jack Stafford

"It was 1940 during the Battle of Britain; I was 17 years old and still at school. Many NZ boys little older were flying and fighting, some dying in the cold northern sky. I had to help. I joined the RZNAF, bacame a pilot, went to England and became a member of the New Zealand Fighter Squadron. In 1946, I returned to New Zealand with my experiences burned deep into my brain. Now very old, I dream of those days and the men I flew with. How I remember!"

Webmaster reviews:

It's actually two stories by Jack Stafford in this issue. "Death at Daybreak" about a mission on 26 November 1944, and "Flying the Hawker Tempest", Jack's first flight in a Tempest.

As all stories by Jack (read a few here!) very stirring. Lets hope Jack some day decides to publish a book with all his memories.

FlyPast March 2009

Scourge of the ‘Doodlebugs’
Graham Berry pays tribute to family member Sqn Ldr Joe Berry, record-breaking V-1 ‘killer’.

In the March 2009 issue of FlyPast there is an article about S/L Joe Berry, Tempest V-1 ace. The article is written by this website's co-worker Graham Berry. Don't miss your copy!

Webmaster reviews:

Great article written by Graham Berry. But I wish FlyPast had used more than just two photos with Joe. (OK, three with the photo of his grave.)

8 pages article with a total of 9 images. A 3-view drawing of SD-L (EJ590) by Pete West. At last FlyPast doesn't use Pete's colour profiles from the 1980s, but there are still a number annoying errors in the drawing...

I now hope Joe Berry isn't the forgotten ace anymore!

(The article is possible to read here!)

FlyPast September 2007

Webmaster reviews:
"Stay Focussed", three pages about Fg Off Brian "Oke" O'Connor who flew with 486 Sqn.

Unfortunately too much general information, half of the article is about 486 Sqn. Which is not bad, not at all, but the article should be about O'Connor. And FlyPast persists of using one of Pete West's old Tempest profiles, far away from his standard of today.

REVI 65/2006

Webmaster reviews:
A 5-pages article written by Michal Havrda (Czech Republic), "Nová metoda". In English "A New Method", i.e. an article about the method to wingtip V-1s! Captions in English, a number of b/w photos and 6 colour profiles. Including Tempest Mk. Vs SD-R(EJ558) and SA-D(JN803). Very nice!!

Thanks to Michal for the review copy!

Scale Aviation Modeller Nov 2006

Webmaster reviews:
In this issue Tony Grand scratchbuilds a 1/32 scale replica of the late Pierre Clostermann's Hawker Tempest V.
About 9 pages with lot of good information and really nice photos showing the progress of his work. 2 pages of Arthur Bentley's 1/72 scale drawings are including plus 11 colour profiles made by Jerry Boucher. Bentley's work is as always excellent (besides JF-E which still wears the incorrect serial number NV784), but Bouchers profiles.... I haven't done any measurements but the fuselages look sooooo stretched.
Anyway a great article showing how to build a 1/32 Tempest! And Tony, thanks for linking to and all kind words regarding this website!

Click here to see a few photos of Tony Grand's Tempest!

An Appreciation: Pierre Clostermann, DSO, DFC. by Richard J. Caruana.

Webmaster reviews:
Richard's obituary of Pierre Clostermann who passed away on 24 March 2006. Includes colour profiles of his Spitfire Mk IXc (LO-D) and his Tempest Mk V "Le Grand Charles" (JF-E). And with help from this website and its Webmaster it has to be an interesting article, hasn't it??

SUPER MODEL 3(7)/2006

Samoloty Clostermanna by Tom Szlagor.

Webmaster reviews: ""
Another magazine, this time a Polish, dedicated to Pierre Clostermann and his machines. Includes colour profiles of Tempests flown by Clostermann: JJ-W (EJ893), US-G (NV968) and JF-Es (NV994 and NV728). Thanks to the author Tom Szlagor for sending me a copy of the magazine! It's a little difficult to evaluate the article as the language is Polish, but it looks nice!!

AVIONS N° 151 mai-juin 2006

This is a special issue dedicated to the memory of the late Pierre Clostermann and his machines. There are no less than seven Tempest profiles by Thierry Dekker.
More info (in French) on Avions' website.

Aeroplane Monthly June 2006

In the June 2006 issue of Aeroplane Monthly there is an article called "Battling the Buzzbombs". It's personal memoirs of Ron Pottinger, a former 3 Sqn Hawker Tempest pilot. There is also a short notice about Pierre Clostermann's decease.

Webmaster reviews:
If you haven't read Ron's book this is a teaser. If you like the article, buy the book! The article also includes a how to order a signed copy.
If you want a digital sampler of this article have a look here Aeroplane June 06.

Aeroplane Monthly May 2005

In the May 2005 issue of Aeroplane Monthly there is a 3-page article about Dave Seath. Dave's whole life and career in the aviation industry is covered. After "retirement" he is now working on Gerry Cooper's Tempest Mk. II (MW763) and Il-2 Shturmovik.

Webmaster reviews:
Finally some news on MW763, but we would love to see more. There are three photos of MW763 today (plus one which is said to be it's wings pre restoration, but are in fact these....)
The engine is still in USA, and there is nothing about when the first flight will take place. Hum...I want to know more! But the article was about Dave Seath though...

RC Model World April 2005

Dave Wigley's 1/5-scale Tempest from a Vailly Aviation kit is featured in a 3-page article in RCMW April 2005 with 14 photos. This specific model, which now is some 7 years old, was first presented in Scale R/C Modeler June/July 1999.

Webmaster reviews:
Great covering of an awesome model!

FlyPast April 2005

The latest issue of FlyPast, April 2005, has a tribute to 16 and 54 Squadrons. Both Sqns with Tempests in the history.
In the section FlyPost it's possible to read a letter from Flt Lt Geoff Wheeler who flew Tempest Mk V and II with 33 Sqn. Two photos included.

Webmaster reviews:
Well worth reading!

Model Aircraft Monthly October 2004

The Model Aircraft Monthly October 2004 issue is having an article where Jim Grant describes the annular cowling Napier Sabre Tempest. The "Letter of the month" is from Chris Thomas, who shares more info regarding Tempest Mk. VIs in "desert scheme".

Webmaster reviews:
The annular cowling article contains 2 pages with 5 b/w photos, most of the text is about the Tempest history in general, NOT the annular radiator...
Chris' letter is more interesting with two close-up photos of NX179 "B".

Model Aircraft Monthly May 2004

The Model Aircraft Monthly May 2004 issue is well worth having a deep look into. Paul Lucas looks at the colour schemes and markings of the RAF's Tempest Mk II and VI. From Mk IIs in the UK, BAFO in Germany, in India to the unusal desert scheme. 18 pages with 26 b/w photos, 8 colour profiles, two 4-view colour drawings and one 1/72nd scale general drawing by Mark Rolfe. There is also a 6 page article by Tony O'Toole who models the Tempest Mk II and VI versions using the 1/48 scale Eduard Mk V kit and the Airwaves resin conversion set.

Webmaster reviews:
Excellent issue, great profiles and drawings.

FlyPast February 2004

The FlyPast February 2004 issue was a great one with lots of good reading concerning the Tempest: - Hendon's Milestones opens in style, with Tempest NV778 suspended from the roof.
- Peter Green presents portfolio on RAF Lübeck, a former Lutwaffe fighter base which turned to Allied armament practice camp. Several Tempest squadrons were stationed there.
- Our own co-worker Jack Stafford has sent in a series of photos from his days at 80 Squadron.
- 6 Squadron is 90 years, used Tempests between 1946-1949. Five pages of history and photos.

Webmaster reviews:
An extra brilliant issue of Flypast!

Scale Aviation Modeller Dec 2002

A well-written article by Richard J. Caruana about the Tempest and its history. 9 pages with 2 colour (on Hendon´s NV778) and 4 b/w photos, 13 colour profiles and good 1/72 scale drawings. In the December 2002 issue of Scale Aviation Modeller International.

Webmaster reviews:
