On 20 November 1944, at B.80 Volkel, Tempest Mk. V (EJ658) and Spitfire LF IX (MJ604) collided. The pilots were 3rd Squadron Flying Officer Charles A. Tidy and P/O Doug M. Horsburgh, 401 Sqn RCAF. The cause of the accident was a Tempest engine failure during take-off. 

Both pilots survived the accident.
